BFI Film Academy Edinburgh & South East Scotland 2019/20 – open for applications

Do you live in the South East of Scotland? Are you 16-19? Passionate about film? Interested in a career in the film industry? 

If so, the BFI Film Academy is for you. This course offers you the chance to be part of our future film industry.

Applications are now open for our next BFI Film Academy in Edinburgh and are open to young people aged 16-19 from across Edinburgh, Lothians, Fife, Scottish Borders, Clackmannanshire, Falkirk and Stirling.

As a student of the BFI Film Academy at Screen Education Edinburgh:

  • You will receive high quality training in screenwriting, directing, production, sound recording, editing and cinematography from one of the UK’s leading film education organisations
  • You can explore your own creativity and passions in a supportive and dynamic environment
  • You will gain invaluable experience working alongside industry professionals who are respected practitioners in their field
  • You will watch a range of cinema from British independent to specialised films
  • You will work in teams towards producing short films


Previous film and tv industry guest speakers on our Academies have included key talent across all areas including producing, directing, cinematography, film development, exhibition and VFX, with credits ranging from Star Wars, Slumdog Millionaire, Children of Men and The Descent, to Dr. Who, Peaky Blinders, Sherlock, Outlander and Skins, to Under the Skin, The Angels’ Share, Anna & The Apocalypse, The Levelling and Calibre, alongside sessions with organisations such as BFI, Edinburgh International Film Festival, Napier University and Creative Scotland focusing on further opportunities and progressing your ambitions.

Previous participants have progressed from the academy onto college and university film and media courses, national BFI residential courses in specialisms such as VFX, screenwriting and film craft, have won awards with their films, screened at festivals, gained internships with BAFTA and BFI, and started working in production companies.

Once you have completed the course, you will become part of the growing BFI Film Academy alumni network with access to opportunities such as BAFTA mentorships. You will also have the opportunity to complete a NCFE level 2 ‘Preparing to Work in the Film Industry’ qualification on the course.

The training will take place in Central Edinburgh (next to Waverley Train Station) on Saturdays across a 3-4 month period, from Saturday 26th October 2019 to Saturday 8th February 2020. 

What is involved? 

Training and development sessions covering all areas of film, viewing of UK and world cinema films, invaluable advice from key industry professionals, screenwriting development enabling each participant to write a short film, with two chosen to go into production.


Learning and Development Dates: Sat 26th Oct, Sat 2nd, 9th, Sat 16th, 23rd, 30th Nov and Sat 7th Dec.

Production of each short film Dates: Sat 14th & Sun 15th Dec.

Post Production, careers days, evaluation and screening Dates: Sat 4th, 11th, 18th , 25th Jan and Sat 1st, 8th Feb.

Courses cost £25. If you are unable to pay the full course fee, don’t let this discourage you from applying. Contact us at as costs may be waived. Bursaries for travel and childcare are also available if you require assistance with these costs.

In order to apply for any BFI Film Academy course, you must:

• Be aged 16 – 19 year olds on the first day of the course.

• Be a UK resident.

• Have a passion or talent for filmmaking and an ambition to work in the film industry.

• Be able to commit to the duration of the course.

• Not currently be at university or enrolled at university when the course starts
