BFI Film Academy Edinburgh & South East Scotland – Open for applications

Want to meet other people like you who love movies, get to make your own short film and start out on a path that could lead to a career in the Film Industry?

Applications are now open for our next BFI Film Academy in Edinburgh and are open to young people aged 16-19 from across Edinburgh, Lothians, Fife, Scottish Borders, Lanarkshire, Clackmannanshire, Falkirk and Stirling.

The BFI Film Academy at Screen Education Edinburgh offers young people specific training in; storytelling, directing, production, sound recording, editing and camera with the final aim of devising, shooting and producing a plot driven narrative short film.

Working with key organisations and individuals within the film industry, as well as using state of the art equipment and training, we provide a comprehensive programme to develop the commercial and cultural knowledge and skills to help make a career in film a reality.

Previous guest speakers across our Academies have included Hollywood director J Blakeson (5th Wave), writer/director John McPhail (Where Do We Go From Here, Anna And The Apocalypse), Welsh director Philip John (Moon Dogs, known also for Downton Abbey,  Outlander), Scottish writer/director Hope Dickson Leach (The Levelling), VFX Supervisor Frazer Churchill (The Flash, Scott Pilgrim vs The World, Children of Men), acclaimed film and television director Colm McCarthy (Dr. Who, Peaky Blinders, Sherlock), Scottish producers Arabella Page-Croft and Kieran Parker of Black Camel Pictures (Sunshine on Leith, Outpost, Legacy)Barry Crerar (BFI Vision Award 2016-2018), Scottish acting talent Freya Mavor (Skins, Sunshine On Leith, Not Another Happy Ending) and Paul Brannigan (Angel’s Share, Sunshine On Leith, Under the Skin) along with many others.

The training will take place in Central Edinburgh (next to Waverley Train Station) at weekends across a 3 month period from Saturday 4th November 2016 to Sunday 21st January 2017. 
Participants have progressed from the academy onto college and university film and media courses, national residential courses in specialisms such as VFX, Screenwriting, Cinematography, our alumni have won awards, screened at festivals, gained internships with BAFTA and the BFI and started working in production companies.

If you have ever considered a career in film then this is an excellent platform to explore the possibilities, meet other young people who share your passion and make a movie.

What is involved? 

  1. Training and Development sessions covering everything from storytelling/storyboarding, camera workshops, sound and sound design, editing to directing, composition and production. In these seven sessions you will also develop a short film script with two chosen to be made into a film by the group – Dates: Saturday 4th, Sunday 5th, Saturday 11th, 18th, 25th – December: Saturday 2nd, Sunday 3rd
  2. Two days filming of each short film developed by the groups – Dates: December Saturday 9th, Sunday 10th 
  3. Three days editing of the short film developed by the group – Dates: January: Saturday 6th, Sunday 7th, Saturday 13th, Saturday 20th
  4. A careers day and evaluation/screening day – Dates: January: Saturday 20th, Sunday 21st 

You must be available to attend all the sessions above and please note there is a £25 participation fee for successful applicants. For those who require financial assistance this £25 fee may be waived and there is the opportunity of travel bursaries and assistance – please indicate this on your application form.

Our selection will be based on passion, ability, talent and willingness to work hard. If you get a place, you will work towards the completion of the BFI\Skillset Preparing to Work in the Film Industry qualification that will enhance your knowledge, skills, CV and further and higher education applications.

If you are currently attending a University course you are not eligible for this opportunity.
